1992 witnessed the first cohort of students entering the Degree in Editorial Photography, as it was then called at the University of Brighton. 2013 marks the 21 st Anniversary of the establishment of the course and we are delighted to be celebrating in style.

To commemorate this event we are publishing two books of photographs. One book will showcase the work of the graduating year, whose work will be shown at their degree show opening on the 31 st May at the University of Brighton Gallery on Grand Parade. Through club nights, print sales, bake sales and personal contributions the students have raised funds to go towards their print bill. To add mystery to the evening 31 un-named prints by the students will be on sale for £20 each. All proceeds will go towards the student publication.

The other book will highlight work of 36 notable Alumni, all of whom have donated a print for this auction. The funds raised here will go towards printing the alumni book.

A light-hearted Q&A with some of the artists will be accompanied by a display of all the prints. Student hosts will be on hand to help you enter your bid online, if you’ve not already done so.

“When I lie on my back and look up at the sky

I feel absorbed into nothingness

I am reminded of the story of the mathematician who sat on top

of a Welsh mountain for ten years trying to divise an expression for the pattern

of clouds rolling in from the Atlantic.

His ambition seemed to reflect my own

I am torn between the sheer beauty of the spectacle and

its overwhelming indifference to me.

How can one come to terms with nothing

nothing is the sum total of everything; everything in play, or in battle,

with everything else

I am even like the planet that supports me, a mere speck

in a vast turmoil of specks all seeking a place to rest

but all driven for ever on by the specks around them

I would like my work to be seen not as a representation

of something else but very simply what it is, the sum of its parts -

an essence in the spectral turmoil.

And so we are back to the cloud…”

My great uncle was an artist called Michael Kidner. When he died I inherited his art books from his studio. I was looking through one of them just recently and this fell out. It’s a polaroid he took of one of his works he did on the pentagon.

I saw a brilliant talk by Yinka Shonibare at the ICA on Friday, a really compelling speaker, I could have listened to him talk about his work all day. He has a piece on display on the Royal Opera House building and at the Maritime Museum at the moment and he’ll also be showing at the Yorkshire Sculpture park in March.

	All right. Listen carefully.
		(The camera slowly moves in
		 for a close-up of PAUL'S face)
	About twenty-five years ago, a young man went
	skiing alone in the Alps. There was an
	avalanche, the snow swallowed him up, and his
	body was never recovered.

		RASHID
		(Mockingly)
	The end.

		PAUL
	No, not the end. The beginning.
		(Pause)
	His son was just a little boy at the time, but
	the years passed, and when he grew up, he
	became a skier, too. One day last winter, he
	went out by himself for a run down the
	mountain. He gets halfway to the bottom and
	then stops to eat his lunch next to a big rock.
	Just as he's unwrapping his cheese sandwich, he
	looks down and sees a body frozen in the ice --
	right there at his feet. He bends down to take
	a closer look, and suddenly he feels that he's
	looking into a mirror, that he's looking at
	himself. There he is -- dead -- and the body
	is perfectly intact, sealed away in a block of
	ice -- like someone preserved in suspended
	animation. He gets down on all fours, looks
	right into the dead man's face, and realizes
	that he's looking at his father.

Cut to RASHID'S face. We see him listening intently.

		PAUL (cont'd) (OFF)
	And the strange thing is that the father is
	younger than the son is now. The boy has become
	a man, and it turns out that he's older than
	his own father.
